Rumours of a Diageo and SAB Miller merger have seen stock prices rise for both companies.

The US state of Maryyland has banned the sale of 95 % ABV spirits with the aim of reducing binge drinking among students on campus. The ban is supported by university authorities who have become concerned by the binge drinking and think it might be the cause of increased sexual assaults on campus.

Two studies covering more than 50 countries have concluded that low to moderate alcohol consumption can reduce the risk of heart attacks and life-threatening flaws in the heart. The findings follow others around the world and most recently a British cardiologist who recently admitted he prescribed wine to his patients over the past ten years believing it helps to stave off heart attacks. Various studies over past years have shown that compared to not drinking at all, researchers have found that moderate drinking resulted in a lower risk of heart attack. As much as 10 to 15 %. These researches have taken part in many places around the world. Conversely the consumption of 6 or more drinks over a 24 hour period increased the risk of heart attack 40 % for those aged 65 and over.

The first move by Carlsberg is making its first move into the so-called “hard drinks” category with a new lemon drink aimed at young men. Carlsberg is a historic beer producer but has moved to keep pace with the modern trends. The “Seth & Riley Garage” is aimed at young men a aged 25 and older and believes the beverage offers an alternative to “standard alcopops”. When I was young, a long time ago, it was the “in” thing to wash your hair with beer. Especially the girls ! Now Australian supermodel has revealed she keeps her gleaming locks in a healthy state with a regular douse of beer. She says the method was passed on to her by her Mother. The old fashioned treatment apparently works by leaving a residue of hops and barley from the beer and it dries leaving a coating which is supposed to give more body and weight. Funny thing, more beer than I am accustomed to, gives me more body and weight !
